2026 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for Microsoft customers. A wave of product retirements and end-of-support milestones is approaching, alongside a Microsoft 365 pricing increase, that will directly impact how organizations run, secure, and scale their digital workplaces.
If you don’t already have a modernization or migration plan in motion, now is the time to start planning. Waiting until deadlines are looming can lead to rushed decisions, increased costs, and unnecessary business risk.
Before diving into what’s coming, it’s important to understand the difference between two commonly confused terms:
- Product retirement means a feature or service stops working entirely.
- End of support means Microsoft no longer provides updates, bug fixes, or, most critically, security patches.
Both scenarios create risk, but retirement deadlines leave no room for delay. Below is a breakdown of what’s coming and how you can prepare your organization to modernize and future-proof your Microsoft environment.
April 2, 2026
SharePoint 2013 Workflows
On April 2, 2026, SharePoint 2013 workflows will be fully turned off for all existing Microsoft 365 and SharePoint Online tenants.
What this means:
- Existing workflows will no longer run.
- Workflow definitions will only be viewable as raw XML files.
- Any business processes still dependent on SharePoint 2013 workflows will immediately break.
To prepare, you need to:
- Transition workflow orchestration to Power Automate
- Replace third-party workflow engines that depend on SharePoint 2013 workflows
For on-premises SharePoint Server 2016, 2019, and Subscription Edition, SharePoint 2013 workflows will continue to function only for the remainder of their client support lifecycle, ending in July 2026. After that point, they are no longer supported anywhere.
SharePoint Add-Ins
SharePoint Add-Ins are also nearing a hard deadline. On April 2, 2026, SharePoint Add-Ins will stop working in all Microsoft 365 and SharePoint Online tenants, including Government Cloud and Department of Defense environments.
For SharePoint Server 2016, 2019, and Subscription Edition, Add-Ins will no longer be available from the public marketplace, though existing add-ins may continue to function.
To future-proof your environment, you should:
- Migrate custom add-ins to SharePoint Framework (SPFx) solutions
- Replace outdated marketplace add-ins with supported alternatives
- Work with third-party vendors to obtain modern, supported versions of critical solutions
July 1, 2026
Microsoft 365 Pricing Increase
Microsoft has announced a Microsoft 365 pricing increase effective July 1, 2026. While pricing updates are not uncommon, they provide an important opportunity to reassess how your licenses align with actual usage.
Preparation steps include:
- Reviewing current licensing needs and eliminating unused or misaligned licenses
- Evaluating renewal terms to determine whether earlier renewal may secure more favorable pricing
- Engaging your Microsoft Partner Manager or Solutions Partner to discuss optimization options
July 14, 2026
SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019
On July 14, 2026, SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019 will reach end of extended support.
After this date:
- No security updates will be provided
- No bug fixes or product updates will be issued
- Running these platforms will expose your organization to increasing security and compliance risk
Organizations should plan to either:
- Migrate to SharePoint Online as part of a cloud-first modernization strategy, or
- Upgrade to SharePoint Server Subscription Edition (SE) for those with regulatory, compliance, or data sovereignty requirements who still want to modernize on-premises
InfoPath
InfoPath is one of the most impactful retirements coming in 2026. On July 14, 2026 InfoPath Forms Services will cease functioning in Microsoft 365 and SharePoint Online. It also marks the end of extended support for the InfoPath 2013 client.
What this means for your organization:
- The InfoPath 2013 client may still run, but should be used with caution
- Any business-critical forms should be replaced as soon as possible
- InfoPath Forms Services–based solutions in Microsoft 365 will simply stop working
Modern replacement options include:
- Power Apps
- Power Automate
- Microsoft Forms, depending on complexity and requirements
How You Can Prepare Now
Preparation starts with visibility and planning.
Audit your usage
For InfoPath, SharePoint Add-Ins, and SharePoint 2013 workflows, run the Microsoft 365 Assessment Tool to identify:
- Where these technologies are currently in use
- Which solutions are upgradeable to modern services
- Which solutions require redesign or replacement
Start SharePoint migration planning
If you haven’t begun planning a SharePoint Server 2016 or 2019 migration, now is the time.
Key steps include:
- Audit your environment to identify servers, custom workflows, add-ins, and classic UI elements
- Choose your modernization path
- Migrate to SharePoint Online for a cloud-first digital workplace
- Upgrade to SharePoint Server Subscription Edition for a modernized on-premises approach
- Plan your timeline
- Migrations can take anywhere from 3 months to 2 years depending on complexity
- Earlier planning leads to smoother execution and fewer business disruptions
